According to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend $ 310 Million this year on Halloween pet costumes. Among the popular costumes are the top-selling traditional pumpkin, devil, hot dog and bumblebee.

Another trend for pets this Halloween is to dress ones dog as a well-known celebrity, evidenced by the rise in popularity of celebrity costumes. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Snooki, Donald Trump and Hugh Heffner are among the many celeb-inspired costumes available specifically for dogs.

While many dog parents are planning to include their pups when they celebrate Halloween, Dogington Post took the opportunity to launch an important Halloween Pet Safety campaign.

Halloween can be a scary time for some dogs, said Dianne Sarasin, Dogington Posts resident Dog Behaviorist and author of The Pee Press. Most aggression and accidental dog bites stem from a dogs fear reaction. We want pet parents to be cautious and considerate on this fun holiday to ensure the safety of the dogs and any children that may encounter them.

This latest initiative by the Dogington Post is designed to make pet owners aware of the many dangers they could potentially face during Halloween. Not only are frightening costumes and scary noises stressful for a dog, but also the many new strangers that come to the front door.

Dog costumes may present a choking hazard if they are left unsupervised; and pets must be carefully watched to be sure they dont ingest any candy or chocolate.

The popular dog news site reaches over 1.5 million dog lovers each week. The site featured numerous Halloween safety articles and even helpful advice on how to train a dog to wear a costume.

We hope this important information gets in front of people as quickly as possible so they can make necessary adjustments before the holiday, said Pegi Dahl, contributor for Dogington Post. Wed hate to hear about someones beloved pet getting sick or injured or worse on because they simply werent aware of the danger.
