So lets talk about sitting at your desk.  I am glued to my desk – I sit here and draw for no less than 7 hours a day (usually more like 10).  I am so happy that I have so much work, but my body…. not so much.

From time to time I get aches in my hands, aches in my neck (huncher!), who doesn’t right? Well this summer, after a horrific work crunch/deadline madness, I started to get uncontrollable tremors in my fingers.  I would lie in bed trying to sleep and my fingers would be jumping around.  Have you seen that movie with Anne Hathaway? Yeah…. to say I was freaked out about it is an understatement.

I don’t watch Oprah, but once I did and I remember her saying something along the lines of ‘your body sends you messages, they are quiet at first but then they get louder and louder if you don’t listen’ (sorry Oprah for totally butchering your poeticism).  So the tremors were my message, and I listened.  I went to a doctor, who sent me to a massage therapist who sent me to a mat pilates class.  So now, twice a week, I get up from my desk (gasp!) and walk to the end of my street and do a whole bunch of stretches and stuff to keep my body happy.  And you know what? It 100% works.

I guess my point is – if you are an illustrator, or designer, or anything that needs to use a computer most of the day (so that’s most people now, right?) you need to look after yourself with a little stretchy exercise.  Or else, your body is going have the last word on the matter!

    I have had similar problems because I sit at a computer most of the day working. I will take your advice and get up and take a walk at lunch time. A few stretches too, will help! Thanks!
