Healthy Afternoon Snacks

You get home from school and you’re hungry. You really want to munch on some candy or dig into a bag of potato chips, right? Having an afternoon snack can be good for you—but only if you make the choice to have a healthy one.

Need some healthy snack ideas?

Try the classic trail mix! Throw your favorite seeds and nuts together. Walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are great options. To sweeten up your snack, throw in some chocolate-covered pomegranates or dried cranberries or both!

Or why not spread an avocado onto a rice cake? It’s super delicious and nutritious because avocados are packed with healthy fats. You can add some sea salt, black pepper, and lemon!

For a snack high in complex carbs and protein, dip celery sticks and baby carrots into hummus. If ordinary hummus is too bland for you, spice it up with crushed pepper flakes, cumin, and garlic.

If you want a real treat you’ll absolutely love baked apple chips! They are a great alternative to unhealthy potato chips and they still satisfy your need for a crunchy snack. You’ll have to make these when you have time since they take up to 2 hours to bake!

Here’s how to make them:

Baked Apple Chips
You’ll need a Mandoline slicer, a thick baking sheet, and some parchment paper for this recipe.

Ingredients

1 apple per person

Cinnamon (if desired)

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 200 F.

2. Slice the apple extremely thin.

3. Arrange on lined thick baking sheet. Be sure that none of the slices overlap each other.

4. Bake for 1 hour. Flip the slices over and then bake for one more hour. Remove apple slices from oven and let them cool.
